In writing, transitions are phrases or words used to connect one idea to the next and used by authors to help the reader progress from one significant idea to support the author’s next shift in those ideas.
In life, transitions are circumstances, events or inevitable changes that force or nudges us to make a change. Each new transition affords us the opportunity to learn something new and meaningful about ourselves! Often we learn how our inner resources can help us cope with change and sometimes even awaken a deeply hidden desire that evokes a surprise of self-discovery of what we really want out of life.
Transitions, shifts and change can be unsettling, uncomfortable, distracting and just force us to move outside our own usual and more comfortable elements. As a futurist I spend a great deal of time researching and exploring trends, seeking out opportunities and positioning us for where we should be to capture future opportunities and expand that message to the world.
As our world evolves it seems as though time is speeding up and demanding that we shift and change faster than ever before. This is because as we learn more through all of the incoming channels of our lives there are many more opportunities for connecting new ideas and dots that are simply too compelling to ignore.
The reality is that our future requires us to explore our past and present place and move those things that are no longer relevant to provide space for what is to come and what is to be.
What makes a transition so uncomfortable is that it often means an ending, in fact in most circumstances of transition and transformation there is an ending. For example, when we send our last child off to college that is an ending to our parenting life as we knew it and the beginning of a relationship with our children in a new and very unfamiliar way. We do make it through but the tears for many of us do flow. I will never forget how I wept when my youngest child drove off to the adventures of her new life, leaving me behind. I have often told my children that parenting is the worst job in the world because if you do your job right you will put yourself out of business.

Once you accept that it really is time to make the shift to something new you will discover this can be a wonderful opportunity for great self-reflection. You will begin to navigate towards what you really want and take time to reorient yourself towards a new future that is often richer and more rewarding than what you have left behind.

Ah, change. Ironic that it’s life’s only constant, don’t ya think? But it never seems to be easy… until now.
Our next PowerUp event is all about Transitions and Transformations. We’ll explore how change affects our lives, our businesses, and our careers; and how we can anticipate, manage, and even ignite a change.
One thing that won’t change is the date and time for this event. On Thursday, April 26th we will be hosting our next PowerUp Success series event, PowerUp Your Transformation and Transitions. In this intriguing panel discussion our panelists will share their personal stories of recognizing the need for and managing critical shifts in their own lives, business and careers. We will further explore how, when we recognize that it’s time for a change, we can develop a road-map for making the journey with fewer road blocks along the way.
We will discuss how own desire for change and the shifts we undertake can create a ripple effect that impacts others who are sometimes uncomfortable with our personal growth and the shifts we are undertaking. Those are the saboteurs who often intentionally or unintentionally attempt to impede our own progress, plant seeds for doubt and frustrate us as we attempt to make shift happen.
In this interactive program we will explore all of those aspects of change, transitions and transformations with our panelists as we break-up into groups to discuss our own desires and challenges to bringing about change. We will then reconvene together and discuss the ideas and suggestions for overcoming objections and hurdles to changes and celebrate ideas for innovative in change and suggest directions for taking on change for personal growth and development.

Dr. Tara Coles is the Founder and CEO of ArtNest.com, an online marketplace and platform dedicated to supporting artists and art and culture in local economies. She also is practicing board certified Emergency Medicine Physician and is raising four children. She is an entrepreneur at heart, a graduate of ACTiVATE sponsored by Path Forward Center for entrepreneurship, and a graduate of the DC Founder Institute. She is interested in geriatric medicine, palliative care, preventive medicine, public health, the intersection of art and technology, art education, and art advocacy. She is an avid reader, lifelong learner, and connector who values kindness, compassion, and community above all. She holds a B.S. in Psychology from Haverford College, an MD from George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences, and completed her residency in Emergency Medicine at Boston Medical Center where she was Chief Resident.
