You may be familiar with the Little Black Dress Experiment, originally launched in 2009 by Society Stylist Valerie Elizabeth. Valerie is the founder of Society Stylist and creator of The Little Black Dress Experiment – as seen on ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, The WB as well as online at Yahoo, AOL and The Today Show. She is a fashion stylist, ambassador for GLAMOUR Magazine, Lucky Magazine. In her experiment Valerie took one piece of clothing, an LBD and wore and restyled it 31 different ways in a single month.
This year Valerie has expanded The Little Black Dress Experiment by inviting specially selected women (known for their style) from each of the United States to participate. Each woman is given a chic LBD by Anne Taylor and a few key accessories to help in their styling. The goal to see how each participant styles her own LBD.
One of our very own renowned local style mavens, Laura Lee Williams of Laura Lee Designs (the designer of those fabulous glittering handbags you see so many of our members carry at our posh events was selected to represent Washington, DC.
Laura Lee decided that it would be fun to make it a local event by sharing the dress with her friends and see how they would style it for the 31 days of August. Ergo, “sisterhood of the traveling dress” was launched and Success in the City’s CEO, me, and Lori van Gemert, our Executive Director were invited to participate.
Our mission, which we happily accepted was to style our dress in our own way, but include a Laura Lee chic bag with each of our changes. Of course we giddily accepted.
On Thursday, we donned our LBD’s and headed out for a “day in the life of Lori and Cynthia. We began our morning by visiting our bank, The Business Bank. Lori
has incredible style and began her LBD morning with a chick red tie and fabulous shoes. I started the day paying homage to my home state Texas and styled my LBD with pastel yellow and pink Sonora boots by Double H Boots (a gift from my husband, a true Texan).
Following our visit to the bank we headed to The Palm for lunch.
We did a bit of a style change prior to heading to lunch, donning fishnet stockings and a change of shoes. Lori wasn’t sure about the fishnets but we were stopped numerous times by both men and women complimenting us on our look!
A busy diva needs to fuel herself throughout the day so off to Danielle’s Desserts
at The Galleria where we visited with Danielle (bakery chef extraordinaire) for quick nibble of her delicious Caramel frosted cake and a cup of java. Of course we watched our calories and shared our treat.
This was such a fun and inspiring project that I am already thinking of fun new ways to style those handy little LBDs that I keep in my closet!
